Carpet Maintenance And Care

Caring for your carpet involves the following four easy steps.

1.  Clean stains immediately after they occur.  The longer a stain is allowed to remain on your carpet, the more difficult it will be to remove.

2.  Vacuum regularly.  Use a vacuum with an agitator bar for cut pile carpet.  Use a suction only vacuum for berber.  Dirt, if allowed to remain in your carpet will cause damage resulting from abrasion.  Failure to vacuum regularly will also lead to matting and packing in high traffic areas.  Vacuum at least one a week.

3.  Steam clean your carpet at least once a year.  Steam cleaning removes deep embedded soil and debris from your carpet.  Steam cleaning your carpet will add to the life of your carpet significantly.  Some manufacturers recommend dry cleaning over hot water extraction.  Always consult your carpets manufacturer before having it professionaly cleaned.  Some forms of wool may shrink if improperly cleaned.

4.  Take off your shoes when indoors.  Carpet is real good at cleaning shoes.  As you walk across your carpet the fibers act like little brushes, relentlessly scrubbing the under soles of your shoes.  This is not a good thing.  You especially do not want this to happen if you have children (who knows what they're been walking through?).  Except for when you entertain guests, adopt a general policy of removing ones shoes when entering your home.
